Abstract

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder depicted by hemoglobin S polymerization that results in sickling of red blood cells, Vaso-occlusion and ensuing tissue ischemia. This review article scrutinizes Sickle Cell Disease in detail looking at its pathogenesis, clinical signs, complications as well as therapy forms including the traditional and unconventional strategies. Consequently, hydroxyurea is carefully examined as an integral component of SCD treatment. Its mechanism of action which includes stimulation of fetal hemoglobin levels and effects on red blood cell characteristics will be discussed extensively. Particularly it would highlight how hydroxyurea reduces pain crises and transfusion requirements while improving quality of life. Long term consequences like growth, cognitive development and less morbidity are some benefits achieved from hydroxyurea treatment for life. The significance of methodical research to assess the safety and efficacy of herbal treatments is emphasized. The article review paper concludes by recognizing the persisting obstacles in SCD treatment, such as discrepancies in healthcare provision and the necessity for innovative therapies. The significance of patient enlightenment, assistance, and continual research is highlighted to enhance outcomes for individuals grappling with SCD. A well-rounded approach contemplating both traditional and alternative treatments is proposed for optimal patient care.
